Early last year, one of the automotive industry’s biggest players did the unexpected and disrupted itself at the highest level of leadership: It let go of its CEO, a career auto executive who led the company to record profits, and replaced him with a man who had spent a big part of his professional life helming an office furniture company.

Ford Motor’s executive chairman explained the decision by acknowledging the new normal for his industry: iconic brands are no longer just competing with each other, but with the more agile, fast-changing tech industry. In this environment, Ford decided to bet on a CEO who has a wealth of experience not in auto manufacturing but in innovation, in turning a traditional manufacturing company into an organization that is tech- and future-focused.
